About Me

Durgesh Tripathi is a Professor (Scientist-G) at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) and the Principal Investigator of the Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT) onboard the Aditya-L1 mission, the first space observatory of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) dedicated to solar observations. He is an affiliate faculty at the Centre of Excellent in Space Science India (CESSI), at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER-Kolkata). From 2014 till 2021, he was the head of the Max-Planck India Partner Group on the coupling and dynamics of the solar atmosphere

Durgesh completed his Ph.D. from the Max-Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS), Goettingen, in 2005. He moved to the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP), University of Cambridge, England, for his post-doctoral research. He spent about six years before returning to India and taking up a position at IUCAA. During his tenure at Cambridge, he was awarded a prestigious research fellowship from Clare Hall. He has also held several positions abroad, such as visiting scientist at the High Altitude Observatory, USA, and visiting professorship at the Kyoto University, Japan. In 2017, the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad, conferred him with the BUTI foundation award in Plasma Science and Technology. In 2013, the Romanian Academy of Science presented the Group Achievement Award in Understanding the Genesis and Evolution of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) to Prof Tripathi and colleagues.

Prof Tripathi has more than 150 publications with more than 3000 citations on his name. Currently, he is a Member of the Editorial Board of Proceedings of Royal Society A, Royal Astronomical Society Techniques and Instruments, and Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Science. Moreover, he is a member of the Coronal Loops Workshop steering committee, a life member of the Astronomical Society of India (ASI) and the International Astronomical Union (IAU). Recently, he has been elected as a member of the Divison Steering Committee on Sun and Heliosphere of the IAU.

Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)

Research

  • Magnetic Coupling and Dynamics of the Solar Atmosphere -- dynamic events at diverse spatio-temporal scale
  • Sun Climate Relations -- Solar Spectral Irradiance in wavelength range that is central to Sun-climate relations
  • Space Missions: Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT) on board Aditya-L1 mission of ISRO

The broad theme of my research is on the understanding of the dynamics and coupling of different layers of the solar atmosphere employing spectroscopic and imaging observations combined with theoretical and numerical modeling.

Observations from space-based and ground-based observatories have revealed that Sun's atmosphere is highly dynamic, showing changes in the complex magnetic structures on the timescales of minutes to hours. Recent developments in observational capabilities combined with theoretical and numerical modeling have significantly improved our knowledge and understanding of various highly dynamic physical processes occurring in the solar atmosphere, including their effects on space weather phenomena and geo-space climate. However, our understanding of the dynamical coupling in the solar atmosphere is far behind the complete comprehension.

Currently, we are using the observations recorded by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrometer (IRIS), Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), and Hinode, along with data taken from various ground-based observatories around the world.

Being the Principal Investigator of the Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT) onboard ISRO's proposed Aditya-L1 mission, I am also performing various studies in anticipation of the future observations recorded by SUIT.
