Current employment:

Sunanda and Santimay Basu Professor of Astrophysics

Ashoka University

Sonepat, Haryana 131029, India

On lien from IUCAA

My research:

I work mainly in the area of High Energy Astrophysics.  My specific interests are Neutron Stars, Supernova Remnants and Gamma Ray Bursts.  Of late my focus has been on the effect of matter accretion on the magnetic fields of Neutron Stars.  Along with my students I am investigating the distortion of magnetic fields caused by accretion, the spreading of matter on the surface, and the use of cyclotron lines as a probe of these processes.

Developmental activities:

I have been closely involved in developmental work related to the Indian space astronomy mission ASTROSAT.  My contributions have mainly been in the design of Coded Mask imaging elements and data pipeline and analysis software.  See the ASTROSAT website for more details on this mission.

Short Term Projects:

I supervise short term summer projects for a few students each year as well as Masters' thesis projects of a limited number of students. This activity is significantly reduced at present due to the pandemic.
