Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) to work on Interface Region Imaging Spectrometer (IRIS) at  IUCAA

Applications are invited for a Junior Research Fellowship for a period of one years based at Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune, India. The successful candidates will primarily work on the analysis of the observations recorded by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrometer (IRIS) and those from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) and Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) both on the Solar Dynamics Observatory.


Eligibility:
Candidates with first class degree in MSc (Physics) or B. Tech.

Essential Qualification:

  • Excellent programming skills in Interactive Data Language (IDL).
  • Prior experience in Solar Astrophysics and data analysis using solar software and emission line spectroscopy.

Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) to work on Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT) at  IUCAA

Applications are invited for a Junior Research Fellowship for a period of one years based at Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune, India. The successful candidates will primarily work on the development of the data pipeline for the Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT) onboard the Aditya-L1 mission. SUIT will be observing the Sun between 200-400 nm and will be providing full disk continuous observations of the Sun from the L1 point. we are the PI institute for the Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT) onboard Aditya-L1 mission of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) that will be launched in 2020.


Eligibility:
Candidates with first class degree in MSc (Physics) or B. Tech.

Essential Qualification:

  • Excellent programming skills in Python.
  • Experience in Solar Astrophysics and data analysis and programming in Interactive Data Language (IDL).

Applications are invited for a Junior Research Fellowship for a period of three years based at Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune, India. The position is funded by the CEFIPRA - Indo-French Center for the Promotion of Advanced Research (IFCPAR) project “The Assembly history of disk galaxies over the last 8 billion years”.

The project consists of two broad areas:
1. Analyse multi-wavelength data set, ranging from UV to IR and CO on galaxies in the HST/GOODS field. The UV observations are from the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT), AstroSat.
2. Perform numerical simulations to understand formation and evolution of various structures in disk galaxies over the last 8 billion years.

The successful candidate can choose to work in either of the two areas and will become a member of the project collaboration between IUCAA (Project PI: Kanak Saha) and Observatoire de Paris, France (Project PI: Francoise Combes).

Eligibility:
The candidate has to be an Indian nationality with an MSc degree in Physics/astronomy with NET qualification. Preference will be given to one having experience in bservational astronomy, data analysis, and/or in one or more of the programming languages e.g., Fortran, C++, Python, IDL.

Remuneration/Fellowship: Fellowship shall be Rs. 25000 per month for the first two years and Rs. 28000/pm in the third year. The successful candidate will be provided with on-campus accommodation subject to availability and medical benefits as per IUCAA norms. In addition, the candidate will have the opportunity to visit Observatoire de Paris, France for the purpose of project collaboration.

Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Radio Physics Lab at  IUCAA

Applications are invited for a Junior Research Fellowship for a period of three years to work under the principal investigator (PI) Prof. Joydeep Bagchi at IUCAA. The position is funded Radio Physics Lab of IUCAA, India and is available immediately.

Job Description:
The main focus of the successful candidate will be to carry out the observations and analysis of the radio astronomy data on radio galaxies and quasars and its other multiwavelength studies. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the Radio Physics Lab activities.

Eligibility:
1. M.Sc./M.Tech degree by January, 2018 in a relevant branch of Physics / Electronics / Astrophysics with 55% marks or more.
2. Proven track record in radio astronomy and radio data analysis (at least 1 year experience).
3. Students with Astronomy-Astrophysics specialization in M.Sc will be preferred.
4. Good in programming language (C++, Python or MATLAB).
5. Good oral and written communication skills in English.

Remuneration/Fellowship: Fellowship shall be Rs. 25,000/- per month for the first two years (only if NET qualified) and Rs. 20,000/- per month for candidates with only M.Sc./M.Tech. degree (without NET qualification).
